Might I first add that the mysql documentation that comes with it, and on-line is excellent. I would use that first before referring to my documents which no doubt contains errors.
Security
By default in redhat, your firewall
will not project the mysql connection port.
This is done by protecting port 3306. (are there others). Funnily enough I
was driven to do this when some very expensive hosters that I found had
errors in their php scripts, and from that it gave me machine that the
database was, and that it wasn't protected. I sent them info to this regard,
and then promptly protected my own. :-)
